PIONEER DV-S757 / DV-600 Universal DVD/SACD Player Review

Following the YAMAHA DVD-S1500, here is a review by CD92 of Pioneer’s universal DVD audio/video/SACD players, the DV-S757 and the DV-600A. The system used to evaluate the DV-S757A and DV-600A is as follows.

Since the amplifier and speakers differ from the previous YAMAHA DVD-S1500 test, some may wonder whether it is even possible to draw any meaningful comparison between universal players. That is a fair point, but the ARCAM CD player CD92 has been used as the reference, and the basis for judgement here is the result of listening tests in which the CD92 was incorporated into both systems. There was also the practical circumstance that the amplifiers were purchased at different times, making simultaneous evaluation impossible. In any case, sound quality assessment in particular depends heavily on the listener, so please treat this review as no more than a reference.

The Pioneer DV-S757A is a player that, despite its modest cost, conveys the sense of temporal continuity that is characteristic of SACD. Rather than letting the softness of detail or the lack of weight that come from cost constraints stand out in isolation, it rounds off the whole and holds things together rather neatly. The Legato Link Conversion function, effective for PCM sources, is also on board — and unlike earlier implementations, it can now be switched on and off. Listening with it off, the tendency of earlier PIONEER machines to favour certain musical software in terms of a certain glamour has been resolved. The solidity of construction and stability of operation are beyond reproach. (Though the video side does show noticeable chroma errors.)

Operationally it is very well appointed, but there is one awkward point: switching the read layer on SACD hybrid discs requires GUI operation, which means the television display must be on. The DV-S757A also appears to have something of a weakness in its feet — part of the underside panel is double-layered, but at the four corners where the feet are, it is a single sheet of steel. If you are placing any sort of Hi-Fi insulators underneath, I found better results by positioning them on the double-layered sections rather than at the corners.

I also used the DV-600A, the predecessor to the DV-578A that became notorious in connection with a certain GOLDMUND affair. Unsurprisingly, the constraints of its low cost show through plainly in the sound — there is no blatant exaggeration or outright breakdown, but the impression is that it does not reach the level where SACD’s qualities can be genuinely felt, as they can with the higher-end model. SACD heard through the DV-600A is better than CD in having less of that irritating edge, but the muddiness that tends to afflict budget SACD machines and full-compatible players is quite noticeable, and it is not particularly adept at reproducing expression or spatial character.
