Listening to the DALI ZENSOR 1 and LEKTOR 1

I recently went and listened to various newly released small speakers from Danish brand DALI.

The ZENSOR 1 — quite good for the price. Budget Hi-Fi in the truest sense. That said, comparing it to the company’s discontinued Royal Menuet II or the Royal Tower, the difference in level is simply night and day. Though one could also argue that the Royal Tower is just too good — historically significant, legendary-class good.

Unsurprisingly, the DALI LEKTOR 1 — one class above the entry-level ZENSOR 1 within the DALI range — has a more distinctly DALI-like tonal character. As a side note, the ZENSOR has a pleasant resonance when you knock on the cabinet. Though compared to existing DALI speakers, the tone feels perhaps a touch dry? In terms of tendency, it gives an impression closer to Dynaudio — visually included. The cabinet has a dry, woody tonal character, so it feels as though the piano finish on the baffle adds a sheen to the on-axis and reflected sound to balance things out. That is probably why it has the sort of sound that would go down well with the British specialist magazine WHAT Hi-Fi. The ZENSOR 1 is indeed a WHAT Hi-Fi five-star product. And the musicality is, I have to admit, quite pleasant. If it were just one size smaller, I might even consider buying one as a compact-speaker enthusiast… If I were buying, it would absolutely have to be the white finish!

The SPEKTOR 1, which is effectively the successor to the ZENSOR — I actually preferred it over the ZENSOR 1.

In terms of musicality, I wonder if the ZENSOR 1 edges slightly ahead of the DALI LEKTOR 1, which sits in the tier above and is roughly the same size? Though the LEKTOR 1 has a wetter, smoother tone that feels more distinctly Scandinavian, so this really comes down to personal taste. The LEKTOR 1, incidentally, received four stars from WHAT Hi-Fi. Perhaps it falls short of the ZENSOR in terms of overall balance and sheer value for money — though the LEKTOR conveys a Scandinavian airiness that is one step ahead in that regard, so I think it is worth choosing based on your own preferences. For the record, my own personal preference was actually the LEKTOR 1. And going further, among current models, the MENTOR MENUET SE is overwhelmingly my favourite.

The ZENSOR is very reasonably priced and excellent value — I found myself wondering whether it was made in China, so I had a look at the back panel, and I seem to recall something along the lines of “designed & manufactured in Denmark” written there… though it was only a glance and I may well be misremembering or misreading, so I shall have to go back and check. 《A later note: those of you who already own DALI products will likely be aware, but the budget Zensor and LEKTOR series are made in China. When I looked at the units again afterwards, both read “Designed & Engineered in Denmark.” My apologies for the confusion.》
