The Acoustic Revive SPC-AV introduced here is a single-conductor speaker cable that looks rather like a length of bright red wire. A simple matte red, slightly tacky polyethylene sheath surrounds a Φ0.9mm PC-Triple C copper single-core conductor that is every bit as stiff as wire. Single-core construction has long had its devotees among the more hardcore Hi-Fi enthusiasts, who consider it sonically superior to stranded wire — yet it is an unusual choice for an inexpensive entry-level product aimed at casual and first-time buyers.

Stripping the sheath is straightforward enough, but the bare conductor tip is hard and sharp, so care is needed to avoid accidentally scratching equipment during connection. Because the conductor is as rigid as wire, cutting it to the right length makes free-air routing possible — though this is a double-edged quality: once a bend is put in, it will not come out, and single-core conductors have a tendency to work loose from speaker terminals and fall free, so both points deserve careful attention.
How does the Acoustic Revive SPC-AV sound?
One might expect the characteristic density and simple soundstage of single-core wire combined with the Acoustic Revive house sound of high resolution and a somewhat emphasised top end — but the SPC-AV is, rather surprisingly, smooth, warm, and mellow in tone, with a coppery colouration that, for better or worse, calls traditional European sound to mind. The quantity of detail, ambient information included, is not particularly high, yet the clarity of direct sound, the directness of its attack, and its crispness share something with the digital cable Acoustic Revive DIGITAL-1.0R-TripleC-FM, and for a cut-to-length cable priced under 1,000 yen, the sense of presence and freshness in the imaging is really quite impressive.
The lightly tacky red PE/polyethylene sheath — which feels something like non-slip rubber — gives the impression of effectively damping the resonance colouration particular to single-core conductors, keeping the sound from becoming harsh on the ear. It plays music with a fair amount of energy and drive; there is a gently bouncing, rhythmic musicality to it that is very easy to live with, and it has a kind of tangible presence that draws the listener into the performance — pleasantly contrary to expectations, in the best possible sense. In exchange for some fine detail, the baseline S/N ratio is good, and I think this is a speaker cable capable of lifting the overall quality of budget systems that tend to sound a little congested, in one go.

The SPC-AV’s sound is warm, open, and wonderfully lively in the midrange. The presentation is mild on the ear, yet the imaging is clear and has real density to it. There is something quite curious about finding a tonal character that evokes the golden age of analogue recording half a century ago in a newly designed speaker cable. Its weaknesses, if any, might be that the tonal colour is a touch matte and monotone — a bright copper hue — and that the number of notes filling the soundstage is somewhat reduced. Honestly, I never imagined that a speaker cable with such a distinctive musical character, so different from everything else, would ever emerge from Acoustic Revive’s lineup, which has generally been known for cool, resolution-first sound.

As it happens, the sound of the Acoustic Revive SPC-AV bears a close resemblance to the tonal character of the British CREEK AUDIO components under review this time, so when connected to the CREEK sub-system, the effect is something like a further reinforcement of the amplifier and CDP’s already warm, musical presentation. The thing is, what I had actually been working on with this system over the years was, if I’m honest, toning down the CREEK-ness of the sound — gently diluting that distinctly European colouration CREEK has. Through a careful selection of audio cables and pairing with the QUAD Lite-2, I had more or less succeeded in bleaching out that character without sacrificing the musicality — but using the SPC-AV takes everything back to CREEK’s traditional, classical sound all over again. And so, the SPC-AV was set aside and not adopted for this system on this occasion.
~ Summary ~
There is no doubt that the Acoustic Revive SPC-AV is a speaker cable that has been tuned, quite deliberately, towards a warm and tonally homogeneous character combined with vivid musical expressiveness — a cable that lets you enjoy the virtues of single-core wire in an accessible, straightforward way. For that reason, depending on the speakers and system it is paired with, the SPC-AV has the potential to become an exceptionally cost-effective choice. One has to respect Acoustic Revive’s judgement in bringing to entry-level pricing a speaker cable with such a clearly defined character — one that, if anything, points deliberately in the opposite direction from the straight-down-the-middle high-resolution, wide-range Hi-Fi sound, and speaks instead to the tastes of more seasoned enthusiasts.
