In Denmark, the company that covers a broader range — from pure Hi-Fi to AV, budget to high-end — is, if anything, JAMO, rather than being simply the “more budget-friendly Danish speaker” option. Yet JAMO too has been absent from the Japanese market ever since a small quantity arrived in the early 1990s. The flagship models of that era were the compact bookshelf JAMO 307 and the floorstander 507 — as I recall, they had a gentle sound and were rather well regarded, though they quietly disappeared at some point. Come to think of it, the drivers on those models looked very much like Dynaudio units, top and bottom — I’ve always wondered whether that was actually the case.

Now, while browsing the audio section of Amazon.com for the first time in a while, I stumbled upon the C603. It was love at first sight. Doesn’t it just look like it would sound good? ♪ The gloss of the driver frames and the wood-grain finish are beautiful. And it uses an inverted driver arrangement, too. The price is also quite reasonable at a list price of $400 (around $270–300 at cheaper shops). The dimensions, however, are listed as 347×175×286 mm, which by my miniature garden Hi-Fi standards is just a touch too large. So I went looking for something about two sizes smaller — and there it was: the JAMO C601… ( ੭ ･ᴗ･ )੭♡
And my goodness, it looks rather splendid. From the photos it has a real sense of quality about it. The dimensions are H224×130×200 mm — ideal in every way for miniature garden Hi-Fi. The price on Amazon.com is $150 per unit, though you can find it cheaper if you look around. The thing is, the C601 is sold individually rather than as a pair for some reason, so the pair price ends up not being all that different from the C603 — at list price it seems to work out at around $450 a pair. I can’t find any awards or accolades in magazines, and apart from it being a Danish product with the right size and looks, the sound is a complete gamble — but the quality of the finish is enough to make you think the gamble might just be worth taking. The black looks great, but the Dark Apple finish is awfully tempting too.
Looking at the official website, the C601 belongs to the C60 line within the Concert series, but there is also an S602 in the Studio series’ S60 range, which is a similar size. This one uses a conventional, non-inverted driver arrangement. The layout is reminiscent of premium compact speakers of a previous era — a design that looks very much at home with classical music. Among more recent products, it might be closest in feel to the French Hyland Audio.
When I tried to look up prices in countries where it’s available, I kept getting results from Australian sites (NZ is out of the question — audio equipment there is inexplicably expensive) and non-English-speaking European sites, none of which made much sense to me. Eventually, though, I found a US shop listing it at $99 a pair. At that price!!! Good grief… nyahaha ♪ By the way, how exactly do you pronounce JAMO? “Jamo”? “Yamo”? ※ Apparently it’s “Yamo”.

こんにちは。今回の小型スピーカー特集も面白そうですね。ＪＡＭＯは全くしりませんでしたが、ＤＡＲＩと同国のデンマークなんですね。家具、インテリアで世界的に知られたお国。もう調べられたかもですがＪＡＭＯはヤモと読むそうです。２００１年ころはＯＮＫＹＯのホームページで紹介ページがあったようでオンキョウーで扱ってたのでしょうか…。（ＤＥＮＯＮはダリですね）コンサートシリーズを使用しての感想もありましたが古いブログばかりでした（Ｓ６０はなかった）写真で見た感じ、木目が美しく如何にも家具の北欧ですね。音も期待させます。日本ではＤＡＲＩやディナウディオの陰に隠れてますが、過去正規輸入されていて、現在されていないとしたら音がユニークだったりするのかもですね。パステルピアノさんは海外のサイトにもいかれてるようで凄いですね。私は日本語以外は無理なので尊敬いたします。まだまだ続く小型ＳＰ特集期待してます。ちなみにＤＥＮＯＮ ＣＸ３シリーズに３イン１のＣＤ・アンプ・チューナー一体型のものが市販価格１７万円位で発売されましたが、試聴等されましたか？オンキョーのデジタルアンプユーザーとしては気になる存在です。では、また。

ヤモの発音情報ありがとうございます。誰かがコメントくれるのを期待して調べてなかったです(汗)。数年前にONKYOが代理店を務めていた時期があったんですね。知らなかったです。というか実際に店頭で販売されてた記憶がないです…。ちなみにアメリカではKlipschが代理店です。Klipschのスピーカーは日本ではヤマハが代理店なのでちょっと複雑ですね。
音質は昔Jamo507を少し聴いた程度ですが、柔らかめのナチュラル・ヨーロッパトーンという感じで、そんなにユニークな音という訳ではないと思います。ディナウディオほど高性能でもなく、DALIほどアコースティックでもなく、audioproみたいに高域がワーッと出るタイプでも無く、音楽ファン向けのゆったり系サウンドでした。勿論、現行機がそういう音かは全く不明です。
私の英語は片言ですので大したこと無いです。好きこそものの何とやらでオーディオ系のサイトを読むのはあんまり苦になりません。近年の日本のオーディオマーケットは消費者置いてきぼりで異様な雰囲気なので、海外を見ることで頭がリセットされます。
RCD-CX1は未だ視聴していません。近い内に聴いてみたいなぁと思ってはいます。ただ、デザインが好みではないので私が購入する可能性はゼロです。DCD-CX3は興味あるんですけど。SACDを別にしてCDプレーヤーとしてはLUXMANのD-N100の方が好きかも。D-N100がSACD対応機だったら…とか思ってしまいました。
